Lately I have been keeping an eye on what causes my carpal tunnel syndrome to get worse. You know doing things with my hands and then noticing that the numbness is worse or that there's some pain in my arm or something like that. Well one thing I noticed is that my hand gets very numb after being on the phone for a long time.
And I'm on the phone a lot. Sometimes three to six hours every single day. Counting all my consultants and employees I managed sometimes as many as 30 people each and every day. I might talk to a hundred different people trying to get things done.
I'm beginning to think that my carpal tunnel syndrome is actually result of making so many phone calls, and not as a result of typing it all.
In order to fix that I got this cute little headphone thingy. It sticks in one ear and uses Bluetooth to communicate with my Blackberry phone. So I still have to dial a phone number to make a call and then I can put the Blackberry back in the holster and just talk and the headphone takes over. I just got it today and I've already made several calls and it's wonderful.
Thus, I talk on the phone with a little earpiece and I type (as I am now) with voice recognition software. I'd say by doing this 80% to 90% of the stress has been removed from my wrists. Combined with wrist straps and some physical therapy from my chiropractor, this should, over the next few months, tak enough stress of my wrists that my carpal tunnel syndrome goes away without any surgery.
In my philosophy is avoid surgery anytime you can. The less the body has to be cut open, the better off is

I have to agree about avoiding surgery whenever possible. I've never had one that healed really well and did what I was told it would do for any real length of time. If you can find other ways to do things, that's a much better solution.
