I was reading Elizabeth's blog and came across her offer to do an interview. Here's the rules.
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
Her questions to me:
#1 If you found a time machine what time period would you pick to visit and why?
Ah, this is a tough question. I find history so fascinating. I think I would go back to the moment the universe came into being. That's where I would start. Then, perhaps, the time of the dinosaurs, around 75 million years ago, followed by the end of the last ice age, 200,000 years ago. I would then see what a mammoth looks like and watch saber tooth tigers.
Human history? I'd like to have been there when the first human looked at America from Asia and wondered what was here. I'd love to have met Alexander the Great and his generals as they fought the Persians, watch the Spartans defend Thermopylae and the Athenians defeat the Persians at Marathon. I'd also make time to visit the library at Alexandria and have a discussion with Buddha about the meaning of life.
Most of all, I'd visit Rome around the time of Augustus. Now, that was an emperor worthy of the title. Another emperor I would like to meet is Vespasian. He was possibly the greatest of the emperors of Rome, even greater than Augustus.
I would like to visit America, north and south, just a century before Columbus. I read a book called "Things my teachers never taught me" and it has fascinating information about how the people over here really lived before white man.
Next, I'd go forward about a hundred years, to see what global warming is really about. I think it will be fascinating to see the effects of the rising ocean levels.
Then perhaps a thousand years into the future, as we colonize the planets. I'd love to take a walk on Mars, and climb Mons Olympus and see the rings of Saturn from a spaceship orbiting the planet.
Then to end the tour, I'd go to the end of time, and watch the universe die.
#2 Where are your favorite hiking trails? (this question is a little self serving on my part!)
My all time favorite place to hike is the Mojave Preserve (www.roseworks.com/mojave.htm ). It has Mitchell caverns and the Kelso Sand Dunes and hundreds of other attractions. Don't go there in the heat of summer and make sure you have a full tank of gas. It's out in the middle of nowhere.
In the spring and fall, I love to hike in Joshua Tree. The Joshua Tree association (www.joshuatree.org ) offers many hikes with professional guides in the less popular but very beautiful parts of the park. See www.roseworks.com/joshua-tree.htm for pictures. I also like Eaton canyon (www.roseworks.com/eaten-canyon.htm ) and Canyon park (www.roseworks.com/canyon-park.htm ) in the San Gabriel Mountains. In the winter, I love to go up the Palm Springs tram (www.roseworks.com/palm-springs-tram.htm ) and play in the snow. Anza-Borrego (www.roseworks.com/anza-borrego.htm ) is also a favorite. Beaches (www.roseworks.com/beaches.htm ) are cool, but in southern california there are so many people and it is so built up it is almost like still being in the city.
#3 What Channel Islands have you visited and is there a best one? (more self serving)
I've visited Anacapa a few times and that is my favorite. It's small (less than a square mile), it's close (one hour on the boat) and in the spring it's full of seagulls, eggs and chicks (birds). I've also visited Santa Cruz (both Scorpion and Prisoners), Santa Rosa and Santa Barbara Islands (see www.roseworks.com/channel-islands.htm for more)
#4 You say in your profile you are a loner reaching out to find more friends. What things do friends have to offer for you that you can't find alone?
I like myself, so I don't have any issue with going to a movie, hiking or traveling alone and do so often. Friend offer, well, friendship. Friends have different viewpoints, they see the world from their own unique space, and that can be interesting. Conversation, games (playing a game along is not very exciting) and socializing. These are things one cannot do alone.
#5 Mac or PC
I began as a MAC guy, but switched over to the PC many years ago. I own half a dozen computers, including servers which I run out of my apartment. I have been in the computer field for 25 years and working on PCs for 10 years now.
