Okay, so I heard from the vet today. Hades is spending the weekend with them, as planned. He does not have a broken claw. One "toe" is enlarged and obviously painful. The vet does not know what it is and wants to do some tests. But these are really expensive, so to start with we're putting Hades on some antibiotics to see if those handle what's going on. It could be just an infection (that's the most likely cause).
If they do, fine; if not, the vet wants to do some x-rays and biopsy's to find out. The word "tumor" came up in the conversation, although it is really really early in the game to be talking about that.
What it really comes down to is the vet doesn't know and wants to do some tests. We'll see how Hades is next week and then I'll make a decision how to proceed.

Are you going to tell us how the poor little dog is?
Last we heard he was spending the weekend at the vet's with possible tests pending.
