News about a friend

Wed, June 28, 2006 - 8:03 PM

I received some very bad news about a friend, one of my best friends.

He and I met almost twenty years ago and quickly found we had absolutely nothing in common. I was a completely introverted computer geek and he was an outgoing, sales- and marketing-type person. In spite of (or pehaps because of) our differences, we became good friends

He is one of the first people in a long time who actually gave a damn about me, and reach out his hand to help, and is directly responsible for changing my life.

Fourteen years ago I met a woman named Claudia. We dated three times in a two week period. I decided I had met my soul mate, and proposed to her one fine evening in the terribly romantic restaurant "Wendy's". She accepted without hesitation. We decided to be married that same day and set it up with the local minister (who happened to be sitting at a table behind us). I called my friend and told him the news. He rushed up to attend the ceremony, then he objected to our marriage! Because of him, we were not married that day. He said we didn't even know each other, so how could we be getting married? He didn't know this woman, had no reason to trust her, and would not let us be united until he became comfortable with her.

So I spent the next couple of days convincing my best friend that my future wife would be an acceptable bride. He finally agreed, and Claudia and I got married, about a week after our first "wedding". Claudia and I remained married for 12 1/2 years until she passed away.

Last night the news I received about my friend was so upsetting, so disappointing, so ... well, right now I just don't know what to think.

I am very sad.
