Big Bear Pirate Faire

Sun, June 4, 2006 - 5:57 PM

On Saturday, June 3rd, I went up to the Big Bear Pirate faire. This is a charity faire, with all of the proceeds going towards some worthy cause. The price to get in was $15, which, based upon the quality of entertainment, was actually a pretty good value.

This faire is about 2 and a half hours from Hollywood, located on the north shore of Big Bear lake in the tiny town of Fawnskin. There was a motorcycle rally of some kind going on at the same time, and the mountain was covered in Harley's and other bikes. On top of that, numerous cars, all from the early 20th century, passed me on the way up the mountain.

It took a bit of work to find the faire, as the faire web site neglected to include a map, or even an address. However, I headed towards the location of the other Big Bear faire and followed the signs to this one.

The faire is directly on the shore of Big Bear lake, so close it's just a few seconds to the water. In the lake itself was the ship from the Time Bandits movie. This is a little boat, with a motor, outfitted like a pirate vessel, with room for quite a few passengers. They sold tickets so you could take a trip around the lake, but I decided not to go.

I watched the Belles of Bedlam perform three times, and their shows were excellent as always. I also saw the Bawdy Juggler, and he was even more funny than usual. The belly dancers were great, consisting of some new faces (new to me anyway) and some of the members of Oojam. Marlow's shadow was good as always, and there were a number of other acts that I didn't see.

As I said, this is a nice little faire located in a very scenic spot. It's very tiny, taking less than 10 minutes to walk from end to end, and it's a long drive. The only problem I ran into (I've been to the Big Bear Faire before and already knew it's a small faire) was the wind kicked up a lot of dust and pollen, which I can't blame on the faire.

I hope you don't mind my being a buttinsky... you might want to write the faire, let them know you had a lovely time, and gently suggest that for next year, maybe have a map or directions as to how to get there. I'm sure it was meant to go up, but for various and sundry reasons didn't. :)

I'm glad you had a lovely time. I might hit that one next year, depending on time, what's going on, all that happy stuff. :::hugs:::
