My sister was born when I was two, a mere seven days from my birthday, on November the first. She was a healthy baby, with a great pair of lungs - just like me.
My
sister and I grew up together, always available, always friends. We supported
each other, played with our toys together, and went to school together. I
remember, in those early years, that my sister was virtually always at my side,
trying her best to emulate her big brother.
It was obvious from the start that she literally worshipped her older brother. She wanted to be just like me. When I was interested in science, she got interested in science. When I started collecting books and magazines, she started collecting books and magazines. I believe I passed along my love of reading and learning to her at this time in our childhood.
One
of my favorite pastimes as a child was to tease Belinda. It was my job, I seemed
to feel, to tease her constantly and mercilessly all the time. I’m sure this
annoyed my parents to no end, although Belinda seemed to take it in stride. In
fact, she seemed to crave any attention from me, regardless of it’s nature and
form.
One of our favorite games was to upset our parents. We were smart little kids, perhaps too smart sometimes. We occasionally set out to determine how much effort it would take to drive our parents crazy. We soon learned it was often a short trip.
Once I entered school, we inevitably began to grow apart, slowly at first, more rapidly as the years went by. We began to lead very different lives, and spent less and less time together. One thing we each always knew we could count on, however, was the support and friendship of each other.
