If
you are a diabetic, you know that any wounds you may
have will take a long time to heal. A diabetic
wound has
the tendency to stay around longer that for any
healthy normal person that does not suffer from
Diabetes type 1 or type 2.
Let
me explain the difference between Diabetes 1 and
Diabetes 2. Diabetes 2 is controlled with diet,
exercise and oral medication some times combined with
insulin. A person can be born with Diabetes 1
or is developed by those who cannot or will not
control Diabetes type 2 with proper medication, diet
and exercise. Diabetes 2 can be cured while Diabetes 1 will stay
with the person for the rest of his or her life and
based on the severity of it, will require not only
daily insulin shots but a very specialized diet and
exercise..
One
of the must vulnerable places for a diabetic is their
legs and feet. Any wound on the feet need
immediate medical attention to prevent any unnecessary
damage that can result on severe infection and amputation of the
leg or feet.
This is due to the inability of the blood getting to the
legs and feet and by cutting down the circulation, it
will damage the nerves.
You
also have to be aware that you do not, I repeat do not tape
or put band aids to the legs and feet of a diabetic,
you use what is called dressing. Dressing is
using gauze to wrap the wound and and after the wound
is wrapped and protected, the tape is placed on top of the gauze. Placing tape or band aids on
the skin of a diabetic is inviting disaster.
The skin is so sensitive that when the person attempts
to take the tape off their legs or feet, they can tear
the skin off and create a wound that can easily get
infected making an additional injury that is
completely unnecessary.
Please
remember that if you are diabetic, you are not to let
anyone to tape or band aid your legs or feet.
Another major point to keep in mind is to never walk barefooted as it is also an invitation
to disaster. Believe me, not all health
providers know about this fact and will tape or band
aid a wound. Do not let them do that, if you
have a wound, ask your doctor for the phone number of
a wound center and let them handle the wound until it
heals.
