Managing your diabetes is of the utmost importance.  With the proper management, further health risks are greatly reduced.  Here are some steps you can follow to manage your diabetes and will help to prevent strokes, blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure and heart disease.  Not everyone knows that they have diabetes and it is a good idea to have your blood sugar levels check periodically to ensure that you are doing well.

  • As we have covered before, there are several types of diabetes.  Please find out which type you are.

  • Type 1 can be controlled by daily doses of insulin, proper diet, regular exercise and care of general health.

  • Type 2 can be controlled diet and exercise.

  • If ordered by the doctor take the medication given to you.

  • Request quality medical care.

  • If you have monetary problems, make arrangements with Social Security for Medicare.

  • Make adjustments to your life style, diet, exercise and medication as needed.

  • If available on your area, attend diabetes classes.

  • Get as much information from your doctor on the disease as possible.

  • Find and work with a nutritionist.

  • Obtain the support of your family.

  • Obtain support from your co-workers.

  • Ensure you are treated fairly at work and know your rights.

  • Attend all your medical appointments.

  • Test your blood sugar level on regular basis.

  • Have a blood test performed by a laboratory every 3 to 4 months.

  • Learn what type of testing you need.

  • Ask your doctor how often you need to check your sugar levels.

  • Check your blood pressure on a regular basis.

  • Check your cholesterol level on a regular basis.

  • Have your feet regularly examined.

  • Have your eyes regularly examined.

  • Have your kidneys tested on regular basis.

  • Learn the side effects of the medications you are given.

  • Control your weight

  • With the help of your doctor, avoid steroids.

  • Get a Medical Alert bracelet, medallion, or other with your current information on it.

  • Do not walk barefoot

  • Do not wear shoes with open toes or open heel.

  • Do not wear tight shoes.
