As of today, no one has discovered what causes diabetes.  The notion that consuming big amounts of sugar is a cause for diabetes is incorrect.  The consumption of great amounts of sugar may contribute to weight gain and an incredible amount of cavities but is not a cause for diabetes.  Nevertheless, there are several risk factors that will contribute to the development of the disease.  What fallows are some of the things that pose a risk.

·         As you get older, the risk of developing diabetes increases

·         History of diabetes in your family

·         Race. Diabetes is more predominant in Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans and Asians.  Nevertheless, the amount of white people developing diabetes is increasing.

·         Good cholesterol level below 35 mg and/or the triglyceride level above 250 mg.

·         High blood pressure

·         Overweight

·         Steroids such as Prednisone

·         Use of thiazides to control blood pressure

·         Medication for transplant recipients

·         Hydantoin (cosmetic/personal-care) medication.

·         Heavy alcohol consumption

·         Immune system deficiencies

·         Viruses

·         History of diabetes during pregnancy

·         Smoking
