One
of my favorite teachers was Mr. Moore. He was great. He read stories to
us in class, interesting stories about ancient gods and goddesses,
spaceships zooming through space, mighty battles, heroic deeds and
damsels in distress. He creatively used literature to get us young
adults interested in English.
He succeeded very well. I remember coming out of that class each day actually wanting to learn more about English. This was very rare in high school … it was a class where the students were not just killing time, they actually wanted to learn.
Mr. Moore taught several different classes at various times during my stay at Rim Of The World High. He taught two mythology classes, three science fiction classes, and two English classes. I took them all.
The mythology classes were lot of fun. Mr. Moore inspired my interest in the ancient religions of mankind, an interest that has remained with me for my entire life. In one class, he concentrated on Greek and Roman myths, while in another he went over the myths of other peoples, including the American Indians, the Hindus, and the Africans. They were all absolutely fascinating to me.
The English classes were a little different. In these, it was our job to learn how to write, how to structure our sentences and to begin to appreciate the subtleties of grammar. Fortunately, I’ve always loved the written word, and had no problems being motivated to learn more.
The science fiction class was a special treat. I never expected to see this class on a schedule for high school, and immediately signed up for it as soon as I saw it. I was not disappointed, even though I’d already read most of the stories on my own. Mr. Moore was able to bring these old favorites back to me, and he made them glow with new meaning.
